“Space Invaders,” by Taito, came out in Japan in 1978. But within a year, 60,000 of these machines were in the U.S.

 

“Pac-Man” from Namco went to the arcades in 1980, and eventually became the first popular arcade game on a console at home.

 

Mario’s original name was ‘Jumpman,’ but was changed after fans took such a liking to him he received his own game. He was also originally a secondary character in “Donkey Kong.”

 

The popular game “Tetris” was actually made by a Russian mathematician, Alexey Pajitnov, in 1984.

 

Shigeru Miyamoto created the “Legend of Zelda,” in 1987.

 

Handheld gaming really became popular thanks to the Nintendo Game Boy, which was released in 1989.

 

Sonic the Hedgehog was originally created by Sega to be the face of their new console known as the Genesis, or Mega Drive in Japan, in 1991.

 

The first Playstation by Sony was released in 1995.

 

Microsoft released the first Xbox in 2001.

 

In 2006 Nintendo released the Nintendo Wii.
