Student Profile: Abby Hebert

Senior Abigail Hebert discusses singing at Carnegie Hall and her passion for performing.

Last month, Senior Abby Hebert had the opportunity of a lifetime; she sang a solo at Carnegie Hall. Last year, Hebert was nominated by Ms. Brittanie Fain, the Xavier Honor Choir teacher, to audition for the Honors Concert Choir at Carnegie Hall. In preparation, she spent her summer tirelessly perfecting her audition song to send in the tape by early August. As the end of October drew nearer, Hebert was pleasantly informed of her acceptance for this prestige.

She performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City in front of hundreds of people on Feb. 7th. Hebert arrived in New York on Feb. 4 in order to pack-in two 5-hour long rehearsals on Friday and Saturday. At her concert, she sang  “The Music of Living,” “Alleluia,” “La Luna,” “Dwijivanthi,” “How Can I Keep From Singing”and “I Can Feel the Spirit,” which was written by the man who conducted her, Dr. Jeffery Ames.

“I was a little nervous, mostly because I knew I didn’t have as much choir experience as a lot of the kids that were also going to be there. However, I worked on my music a lot and tried to be well-prepared, so that made me feel a lot more confident walking into the first rehearsal,” said Hebert.

Hebert first took voice lessons in 6th grade and has been singing ever since. However, she had not sung in a choir until her sophomore year at Xavier. She was inspired to join the Honor Choir at Xavier at the suggestion of her best friend Eliot and by watching Broadway shows.

For Hebert, singing is an outlet for her to express herself. She said, “It is a truly amazing experience to be a part of an ensemble, whether it be in a choir or in a musical and connect with the other performers around you to create something beautiful. It is such a rewarding experience to finally get to perform what you have been working so hard to create for an excited audience.”

Besides singing, Hebert also loves dancing. She started this hobby when she was five years old and enjoys combining both her singing and dancing talents into musical theater. A dedicated performer, Hebert has participated in every musical since her freshman year at Xavier. Currently, she is performing as a featured dancer in Brophy’s Spring Musical “The Addams Family.”
