The Xavier Cross Country team takes on the highest peak in Arizona.

Last summer, while some were laying by the pool or vacationing with family, the Xavier Cross Country team took on Mount Humphrey’s Peak in Flagstaff.

It was a breezy day and a storm was forecasted, but the Gators were ready for the 10 mile uphill adventure. Accompanied by some sandwiches and an optimistic attitude, the team began their exploration.

The trail started off rather flat, with the only visible scenery being tall, beautiful and green trees. Senior Jane Miller said, “It was gorgeous and seeing it during the summer when it’s not covered in snow was really pretty. Hiking is always the best activity because you can be active but also talk to your friends and take cute pictures along the way.”

About an hour into the trail, the weather started dropping and thunder was rumbling. Despite these unexpected weather conditions, the team persevered and made their way up the path.

Finally, after over two hours of uphill struggles, the girls made it to the top of the peak at 12,637 feet. Following a quick photoshoot session at the top, the runners started their way down. Parts of the trail were very steep and slippery, and everyone had to work together to ensure their safety.

The way down was the exact same trail, but the team noticed beautiful features of the mountain that they did not see on the way up. Junior Pamela Ebenroth recalled that,  “Humphrey’s was a super fun way to bring the team together. I highly suggest coaches set up a Saturday morning hike at the beginning of a season as a way for all the girls to step outside of their comfort zone while still getting a workout.”

Before taking on this monstrous peak, it is important to prepare by packing snacks and checking the weather before the trip.

Although USDA Forest Service describes the trail as “long and steep,” they also describe the view at the top to be like “standing on top of the world.” If you and your friends are looking to partake in an adventurous activity, the rigorous scale up Mount Humphrey’s is an option worth considering.
