A real estate investment firm owned by Bill Gates recently purchased a huge plot of land in Arizona for $80 million. Why did Bill Gates choose to spend this much money on barren land? His goal is to develop and create a “smart city.”

One of Gates’ investment firms, Belmont Partners, bought nearly 25,000 acres of land in Tonopah, AZ. The city of Tonopah is about 50 miles west of Phoenix. This “smart city” will be called Belmont, named after Bill Gates’ investment firm.

“Belmont will create a forward-thinking community with a communication and infrastructure spine that embraces cutting-edge technology, designed around high-speed digital networks, data centers, new manufacturing technologies and distribution models, autonomous vehicles and autonomous logistics hubs,” Belmont Partners said in a press release.  According to Belmont Partners, the city will contain space for 80,000 residential units, 470 acres for public schools and 3,800 acres assigned for commercial buildings, offices and retail outlets.

The community “will transform a raw, blank slate into a purpose-built edge city built around a flexible infrastructure model,” according to Belmont Properties. The expected Belmont location is perfect — right by the newly opened Interstate-11 freeway, which is said to extend its route through Belmont to Las Vegas.

Senior Jope Adaralegbe believes “this smart city will provide a great potential for education, shelter, business and technology.” Senior Sinai Urbieta agreed, saying, “this is a smart yet expensive investment that will cater to the needs of all kinds of people and create a better future for following generations.”

It is still unclear when Belmont will be built. However, Arizonans and even people from around the country can anticipate this monumental move toward innovation.
