This year the Lady Gators are on the road to history, as they battle for the 6A Girls Basketball State Championship. With head coach Jennifer Gillom, and senior players Montana Oltrogge, Katie Hassett, and junior Leilani McIntosh as regular high scorers, the gators feel as though they cannot be beat.

The team’s mentality has been victorious since day one. The gators began preparing early in the preseason, with weekly sessions in the weight room and miles on the track. Coach Gillom got straight to business, focusing on defense and footwork. Gillom has preached that defense is everything needed to be successful. The Gators have learned that hard work on the defensive end will bring success on the offensive end. All of the hard work, early practices and injuries that the ladies have had to overcome, have paid off, now that they head into the State finals.

“For me it’s really exciting that Xavier enters the finals, having never won a State Championship. With Coach Gillom as head coach, and our fabulous girls, we are extremely confident. We will all be there supporting our lady gators! Let’s go Gators! Let’s take STATE!” says Xavier Athletics Director, Sr. Lynn Winsor.

Xavier Basketball has not seen in a State Championship since 1986, and even then, sadly the Gators lost. Winning the State title will make history for Xavier College Prep and will add to the current state titles of Volleyball, Soccer, Cheer, and Swim and Dive.

“It’s an amazing feeling to know that we will be playing in the State Championship game! It shows that all of our hard work has paid off this season, and we are in the final stretch! We have talked about this moment from the beginning of the season and we are finally here,” says senior Montana Oltrogge, who regularly battles every second of the game for her team. The Idaho State commit has devoted her life to basketball and the Xavier Basketball team. She constantly lifts her teammates up, hoping to maintain that focus that will earn us a State Championship.

Katie Hassett is “ecstatic to be going to state” and she credits the coaching staff and teammates for the team’s success. She is simply eager to make history for Xavier Basketball. Everyday Katie comes out with a lot of heart and a desire to excel. She often has a tough defensive assignment, but the Lady Gators know that they can always depend on her.

“There is a lot of pressure, but I honestly believe if we all stick together we can definitely get this W,” says junior Paris Moore. “I believe our coaches, who push us to our max everyday and my teammates who are their daily pushing to make each other better, and stronger, have helped us prepare. Non-stop constructive criticism, its all-out love!” As a starting 3 point guard, the team relies on Paris to attack the rim and bring aggressive defense every game. She carries a lot of weight on her shoulders, and seems to always deliver.

As a community we hope everyone will show up at the Wells Fargo Arena today, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. wearing Gator blue and ready to cheer on the Xavier Basketball team as they make history. Xavier will be providing a rooter bus to any student, wishing to attend the game, coupled with a pizza dinner! Come out and support the as the Gators take STATE!

Great article. I am praying for our victory tonight. Whether we win the game or not, our school is still victorious because we are a team that care and support each other. Go gators! With love.

Nice way to finish the season. Hopefully they can turn this momentum into something in the SEC and NCAA tournaments. Go Gators!
