Are Xavier students excited about the release of the new iPhone XS, XS plus, and XR? All three models of the phones, XS, XS plus, and XR will be available for purchase coming October 19th. However, as young women pursuing excellence, it is important for Xavier students to understand more than just the social “clout” in regards to their purchases.

One student, senior Evelyn Cardona, stated, “No, I will not be buying the new iPhone. I feel Apple has become almost like a luxury brand and that their products are overpriced.”

The release of the new iPhones has sparked a discussion into whether the devices are worth their high price tags. High school students, while tech savvy, are still concerned about these price increases.

Another student, senior Hannah Shulski said, “No, I won’t be buying the new phone, as I already have an iPhone that works well enough and they are so expensive.”

While more highly priced, the new iPhones offer amenities previously not offered on outdated models. Students can get more “bang for their buck”, as new models offer increased camera displays, security, and battery usage features.

The Xavier community has been gripped by the iPhone’s popularity, as most students around campus carry one. However, is the accolade of owning one worth its increasing financial burden?

The iPhone, first introduced in June 2007, has quickly evolved beyond its original model. Current iPhone models, the X and above, are within the $1000 price range. As Apple originated as a pioneer within the technology industry, they have quickly outgrown their grassroots beginning.

So, does the increase in iPhone pricing display a trend for the American marketplace? As citizens become more and more dependent on their phones, the market for quality devices increases. However, as Apple holds a virtual monopoly on the industry, will Americans and Xavier students continue to purchase them, even as prices increase? Or will future students fight back, refusing to purchase the overpriced devices?

The new iPhones prove to be an increasingly luxury item in modern America. For many Xavier students, the new iPhone prices are simply too high. As prices increase, Apple has begun to alienate its ever-loyal fan base.
