On Saturday May 4, at Paseo Racquet Center, the Xavier tennis team took on the Desert Mountain Wolves in the state championship match, coming home with a victory, 5-4. This victory was completed with three single wins and two doubles match wins.
As the #1 ranked AIA Division 1 tennis team in the state, Xavier had a strong finish to the 2024 season, finishing with a 14-1 record. Recognized for excellence in competition, Xavier now has its 153th state championship and fifth this year alone.
Tennis player Maggie Henry 25’ stated, “We were all so anxious during the last set, hoping we would become state champions.”
The Gators were able to secure the championship title through outstanding performances by Danielle Dyer ‘24 and Addison Solomon ‘27.
Solomon was crucial in winning the match and angling for the state championship. “Playing in competitive matches with my teammates was an experience that I’ll never forget,” she said.
Not only was the varsity team successful in their state championship match but the doubles team Dyer and Belani Soto ‘24 won the doubles state championship, also defeating the Wolves.
This year’s team was the first to win a tennis championship in four years and it is important to recognize the senior captains: Dyer, Soto, Kristina Stender and Megan Wheeling for their dedication throughout the last four years, bringing home a title.
