One of the country’s best athletic programs is bolstered by the strength of the badminton team, often referred to as “birdie beaters.” The athletes are slowly ending their regular season and practicing for state championships starting late October.
Top players on the team, Maggie Henry ‘25 and Corrine Ladha ‘25 lead their team to victories in both singles and doubles matches.
Senior captain Henry believes that being a part of such an extraordinary school program pushes her to excel and perform her best in games.
“Xavier is extremely competitive both athletically and academically. I think joining this team made me the best player I could be,” Henry stated.
Henry, ranked fourth in the state, has been an outstanding player these last four years, going to state for both singles and doubles. She will leave big shoes to fill and will leave a legacy on the team.
Ladha is second on the varsity lineup. Ladha expressed how thankful she is to be senior captain for a close-knit, hardworking team.
“This team has slowly turned into a community. I will be sad to leave next year,” she said. Ladha emphasized how close the team was, having dinners and sleepovers. Her teammates are some of her best friends during her time at Xavier.
“My favorite part about the team is just going to practice daily and having fun with my friends. I think everyone who is interested, despite previous experience, should go into the sport with an open mind and just enjoy the time you have,” expressed Ladha.
After a sudden injury, badminton player Ella Wilson ‘25 took it upon herself to join the team this year as an assistant coach.
“Everyone is so nice, welcoming and funny. We are like a family hanging out a lot outside of school,” Wilson remarked.
Despite her setbacks, Wilson was able to use her knowledge as a player to help the team this season. “I have grown with the team by trying new drills, running different plays and finding new ways to better teammates on and off the court,” said Wilson.
With a record of 10-3, the 2024 badminton team is ranked fourth in the state. The first round of state is approaching and the team is winning. This season they are playing the best they have in years and they have big aspirations.
The next match is senior night, Thursday, October 10 at 4:00 p.m.
