Khalia Lanier receives Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year

Khalia Lanier receives the most prestigious high school athletic award in the nation.

Yesterday afternoon, the entire Xavier community congregated in the PAC for a surprise assembly. Rumors had already spread throughout the school: is Sr. Lynn resigning? Malala coming to school? Xavier and Brophy combining?

When students entered the auditorium, however, the truth revealed itself. Senior volleyball player, Khalia Lanier, was named the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year. Lanier joins the most elite group of high school athletes with this honor.

We were able to interview Khalia after the assembly to discuss her award.

What does it mean to you to be named the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year?

This award is an incredible honor, and it is just hitting me how amazing this award really is. It is especially amazing because the other names of the players who have received this award. It is crazy to have my name said next to the names of those incredible players. It makes me want to work that much harder.

Did you know what the assembly was about, or was it just as much a surprise for you as it was for us?

I had no idea! I heard all the rumors and thought that Malala was coming or something crazy – but I had no idea the assembly would be this. I was just as surprised as every student.

What was the most surreal moment of today?

The whole day was amazing, but probably the most surreal moment was when I was on the stage and saw all the PAC lights shining directly on me. Speaking in front of everyone was crazy as well.

What significance have sports played in your life?

One of the biggest impact of sports is that they have helped me gain more patience. I used to get easily upset at missing a dig or a hit, but through sports, I have learned to be patient and keep calm. Sports have also shown me the value of confidence and how you can achieve anything if you have enough confidence in yourself.

What will you miss the most about high school sports?

That’s tough. I think what I will miss most are my teammates and the close bonds I have created with them.
