This past week, Sister Lynn Winsor celebrated 50 years of working at Xavier College Prep. Over time, she has been heavily involved in Xavier’s flourishing and evolving.
She has enjoyed all aspects of her job. “I love all of it- seeing all of the students perform and have success in what they’re doing. Even if they don’t win, it’s just fun to see them out there,” Winsor said.
Throughout her 50 years, Winsor has been heavily involved in the sports department. As the athletic director, she almost always attends the home sports matches and has coached the Xavier golf team for decades.
Arriving at XCP in 1974, she started as a physical education teacher and later became the vice principal of activities and athletic director.
She has coached golf, basketball and softball at Xavier. “I love being around the student athletes and coaches. My favorite part has been adding new sports programs to Xavier and making more activities available for the students,” she remarked.
She has made her mark at Xavier, affecting everyone around her. Whether it’s reminding everyone to be friendly with her special motto, “Let’s be friendly”, cheering on the teams at their games, or giving rapid announcements in the morning, Winsor is a memorable person.
To commemorate her 50 years, Xavier celebrated her with a luau–themed day on April 4. Students were given leis during homeroom and at break they celebrated in the courtyard.
The Executive Board gave her a speech in front of the school community and sang her a song, which was named the “LBF Song.”
Xavier renamed the Activity Center the Winsor Activity Center. The sign was officially changed and presented on April 4 to the student body and staff. This was also a surprise to her.
That night, there was a party in honor of her 50 years that kept with the luau theme. Tropical dancers and musicians entertained the many guests, which included Dad’s Club members, alumnae, retired teachers, and members of the Diocese of Phoenix.
“It was a wonderful evening, I had so much fun and it was a great experience,” Winsor said.
While reminiscing on her past 50 years, Winsor exclaimed, “Fifty years at Xavier has gone by so quickly.” She has enjoyed every minute of it and has loved seeing Xavier grow with her help.
The staff loves her and loves working with her. Jeri Butts, director of school attendance and Dad’s Club liaison, has been working with her for 15 years and her favorite memory with her was when she attended an event where Winsor was presented an award. “It was one of my favorite times and it was really cool to see her honored.”
Susan Contreras, director of athletic scheduling, said, “I don’t know if you can have one favorite memory with Sister Lynn because there are so many amazing things that she has done for everyone on campus. Every day coming to work is a great day because you never know what’s going to happen.”
Winsor’s legacy is more than just her years of service—it’s about her love, dedication and commitment to the students and the Xavier community. After 50 years of making a difference, her influence will continue to inspire students and staff for years to come.
