Xavier constantly has something new happening on campus. Whether it’s an annual auction, seasonal decorations or even the baby blades being planted, there is always something fresh and exciting in the air.
Most recently, Xavier introduced police officers to the campus community. These officers are on campus daily, from the first bell to dismissal.
The weekly rotation of officers are Les Montoya, Rey Benson, I. Isaac and Kelsie Sanborn.
“We wanted to continue the safety that’s already embedded in Xavier, and now, with the addition of our police officers, we have the ability to strengthen this safety facet of our community,” Dean Denise Macrina said.
Officer Rey Benson, who served six years with the Phoenix Police Department, shared that his decision to join Xavier was rooted in shared values and a sense of community.
“My initial response was ‘yes.’ The reason why I said yes is because of the environment and the values of this school. They’re the same core values I have and what I represent,” said Benson.
Both Benson and Officer I. Isaac share the same desire for an emotional connection with students.
“I’m here to build positive relationships with students and let them know that I’m here for them,” Isaac said.
“I want to be part of a family here. I want to grow with this community, not just serve as an officer, but come to campus every day, watch students grow, and see where their futures take them,” Benson said.
Before joining the police force, Isaac worked as a physical education teacher, giving him experience working closely with students.
Isaac was recently featured in Xavier National Honor Society’s Instagram reel, highlighting his willingness to participate in the community. The reel reached 27,000 views.
Benson and Isaac also hope to build a positive perception of law enforcement and help students understand that officers are here to do good.
“I want to help change the outlook on law enforcement. I know that around the world, some people see us as good and some see us as bad. I just want to build comfort and safety here, and help everyone understand that we’re here for you,” Benson said.
“I want students to understand that law enforcement is here to support you and be here for everyone on campus,” Isaac said.
Xavier’s students and community have welcomed the officers since their arrival, and they look forward to the continuous impact they will have on campus.
