NASA women are now Legos
“Excited to be part of such a great group of women and even more jazzed about women in STEM!” said Mae Jemison on Twitter. She, along with four other women, are being immortalized in the form of Legos as symbols of the crucial roles women have played in the U.S. space program. These special Legos will eventually be sold in stores.
The concept was submitted by science writer Maia Weinstock in the Lego Ideas competition. Beating out eleven other project ideas, Lego commented that they were enthused about the “inspirational value” of the idea. Weinstock told BBC, “I hope it sets a new example for both girls and boys. Girls, in that they can and should be engineers, scientists, and mathematicians, and boys, in that they internalise at an early age that these careers are for everyone, not only men.”
In total, there are five women in the line-up: Margaret Hamilton, Nancy Grace Roman, Sally Ride, Mae Jemison and Katherine Johnson. Margaret Hamilton is a computer scientist who was recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work on Apollo 11 and the success it had landing on the moon. Nancy Grace Roman served as NASA’s chief astronomer and was an integral asset to the creation of the Hubble Space Telescope. Sally Ride was the first U.S. woman in space. And Mae Jemison was the first African-American woman in space. Katherine Johnson, now 98 years old, was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Her story as a NASA mathematician was a part of the 2016 film, “Hidden Figures.”
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, women make up less than 25 percent of STEM careers. The U.S. Department of Commerce accredits this gap to a number for factors: “a lack of female role models, gender stereotyping and less family-friendly flexibility in STEM fields.” By putting these five incredible women on toy shelves in stores, girls will be able to see and hold real women of science. Lego saw the inspirational value behind Maia Weinstock’s idea, and are currently finalizing product designs for the set. Lego has stated that Women of NASA is planned to come out towards the end of the year.
