Eating vegan in the valley
For some vegans, it’s pretty difficult to find places that serve to their accommodations, but luckily, Phoenix has some great spots. Just as a reminder: vegans do not eat any animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs. Although I’m not vegan anymore, I still love to eat at these restaurants and enjoy the foods veganism has to offer.
Green New American Vegetarian
One of my favorite restaurants is Green New American Vegetarian. With its two locations in Scottsdale and Central Phoenix, Green serves a large variety of food and sweets. It might sound crazy, but all of their “meat” is made from mock-products and doesn’t come from any animals. They serve up great sandwiches such as fried-mock-chicken and burgers, and they have a great variety of rice bowls and burritos.
I love to order their “Wendy’s Pickle,” a sandwich with crispy buffalo “chicken” with a side of thyme fries. Keep an eye on their board for different taco and burger specials, or ask one of their fun workers for their order suggestion. At Green, you order at the counter, so if you’re in a hurry, this is the spot for you. Don’t be intimidated by the thought of fake meat, it might sound pretty odd, but it tastes just as good! If you’re at the 7th Street location and are in the mood for some sweets, head next door to Nami for some insane desserts.
Nami
Even before I was vegan, Nami had always been one of my all time favorite dessert spots in Phoenix. They’re famous for their “tsoynami,” which is soy-milk-based creamy ice cream. They’ve got a wonderful list of tsoynami combinations, and you can take your pick from vanilla, chocolate or swirl. “Dough Boy” is one of their more popular flavors, which loads their vegan cookie dough into the ice cream. “Soy Captain” is a combo of vegan captain crunch cereal and fresh strawberries. “Banana Cream Pie” is a mixture of bananas, vanilla wafers and homemade whip cream. Junior Tatum Dial says, “Even though I’m not vegan, the ice cream is better than any other ice cream I normally have. It’s super refreshing and I absolutely love the variety of flavors to choose from.” Besides their frozen treats, they have a great array of baked goods like doughnuts, cakes and cookies. If you can’t decide between ice cream or a warm treat, order “The Mash,” where they place a surprise baked good into your tsoynami.
The Coronado
Down on 7th Street, you’ll find a warm and welcoming little restaurant called The Coronado. This vegetarian/vegan hidden gem has an amazing environment and an even better menu. Their breakfast is served all day, with entrees such as vegan biscuits and gravy and avocado toast. They have a beautiful display case of incredible baked goods, like vegan brownies and scones. With a plethora of tacos, burgers and other bites, The Coronado serves up amazing meals for vegans and vegetarians alike. At my last visit to The Coronado, I ordered a biscuit breakfast sandwich and a funfetti egg-less cookie, and they were both fantastic! Whether you’re coming for Sunday morning breakfast or Friday after school with your friends, this busy café has a fun setting and is sure to be an enjoyable visit.
