Xavier fall sports dominate, compete in state tournaments
As the fall sports season comes to a close, many of the teams have competed in the state tournament, striving for the first place finish.
Xavier is known for being competitive in sports across the board. Every sport thus far has been either in the state tournament or has won the title.
The varsity volleyball team has won eleven state championships since 1996. The head coach is Lamar-Renee Bryant.
Senior volleyball player Lanie Wagner said, “This has been a really good year for us, we have a really close team both on and off the court. Our chemistry has helped us to our 17-0 finish in conference play.”
This year, our Xavier gators have earned the first seed position in the volleyball state tournament. The first round of state was on Tuesday Oct. 31 at Xavier. After winning that game, the second round was held on Thursday Nov. 2 at Sandra Day O’Connor. The gators continued the winning streak at the semifinals on Tuesday Nov. 7 and headed to the state final. On Thursday, Nov. 9 at Mesquite High School, the gators beat Corona del Sol in a three set game, winning the state championship for volleyball in the 6A division.
Since 1980, the Xavier golf team has won 34 state championships. The head coach of the team is Sr. Lynn Winsor, Vice Principal of Athletics. Senior golfer Lauren Faulkner said, “The team shares a tight bond with each other. We are supportive of our teammates and cheer for each other in competition.”
At the Omni Tucson National Resort on Oct. 31, the Xavier golfers took another state title, with many team members finishing in the top of the field. Sophomore Ashley Menne finished first overall and other team members were very successful.
Look forward to hearing more about Xavier sports in state throughout the year.
