World Youth Day, which is more of a week starting on 22 Jan. and ending on 27 Jan. 2019, occurs every three years and attracts young adults from all over the world. Xavier has been participating in World Youth Day since 2016, as it has become a staple for Xavier faculty and students. The special day is organized by Pope Francis and the Catholic Church in a city closely selected from a large list, this years being Panama City, Panama. The last World Youth Day in 2016 was held in Brzegi, near Krakow, Poland. In addition, the theme for this years is “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk 1:38).

With the impending date and Xavier students and faculty getting ready to head off to Panama on Sat., Jan. 19, I decided to catch up with a few of the students in order to see their hopes for the trip.

Senior Sarah Fox said that, “This is the second time, I went to Poland last time, that I have gone so I am looking forward to the vigil. I’m looking on a deeper connection with God as well as growing with my fellow Xavier sisters.”

The youth attend a Holy Mass upon arrival with evening music and reconciliation activities. The Pope also makes an appearance on Thur., Jan. 24, by giving a welcome address at a prayer service. On Sat., there is a walking Pilgrimage to a Vigil Site, with an Evening Vigil led by the Pope. Then, closing ceremonies on Sun. include Holy Mass led by the Pope and the next host city is announced.

Senior Sara Filler added, “I am looking forward to meeting different kids of my age from around the world and being able to practice my Spanish, since it’s in Panama.”
