Naming the do’s and don’ts of the dance season
Alexa Robinson ’16, dance aficionado, lists the trends of the dance floor
With homecoming around the corner and Halloween hastily trotting behind, dancing and parties will become the inevitable. Since I, Alexa Robinson, am commonly known as, “The Dancing Goddess,” you may have been planning to come to me for advice. Well, reader, read no further. I am going to list this fall’s dancing do’s and don’ts. Study and invest in these tips ladies. These do’s and don’ts are almost just as important as the ISO’s.
DO #1: The Fist Pump
The fist pump is a movement that involves jumping to the beat, emphasis to the beat of of the music. One can stretch her arm above them, hand in a fist. As they jump, they will bring their hand up and down in a punching motion. A good song to practice the fist pump is the chorus of “I Got A Feeling” by the Black-Eyed Peas.
DO #2: The Team Captain
What could this possibly be? The Team Captain is a movement that involves one to periodically point at people, those who are close; those who are far, it doesn’t matter! As long as it looks like they are choosing a team for her Kickball game. A good song to practice this to? “I Love It” by Icona Pop.
DO NOT #1: The Swaying Sally
It’s true, this move is as awful as it sounds. The Swaying Sally is a continuous sway of one’s body. Usually, the arms are pinned to the side, the eyes are stuck on the ground. Yes, it’s true, the “swaying sallies” are not even swaying to the beat of the music. The Swaying Sally comes off as uncomfortable and self-conscious movement. There is absolutely no need for this on any dancefloor. Reader, you are a wonderful individual; dance and have fun. I guarantee that no one will think strangely of you for having a great time, and they will only be inspired by your confidence (and wickedly sweet dance moves).
DO NOT #2: The “Oh I don’t like to dance”
OF COURSE YOU DO. Everybody does! There are only so many school dances during your high school experience, and, you must take advantage of each one you’re given. As a senior I can promise you this, having fun at school dances with your friends is much more important than worrying about what others are thinking about you. Never claim that you don’t like to dance because, frankly, that’s impossible! If you’re truly dancing with your heart, then I can guarantee that you will be truly having fun.
I can hear the other girls now, “Omg so-and-so just did the fist pump! She’s so awesome and confident! We have to do that too.”Check it out, you’ve already started a trend.
So when you’re boogying on the dance floor at the dance this Saturday, or you’re giving a Broadway-worthy performance for your bathroom mirror at home, remember my words. Add in a few fist pumps or even try the team captain. Never let yourself be a Swaying Sally and for crying out loud, do NOT claim that you don’t like to dance! Just be yourself out there and your dancing season will be just as groovy as The Dancing Goddesses’ was. See you on the dance floor, ladies.
