On March 3, Xavier-Brophy speech and debate dominated at the 2024 Arizona National Qualifiers.
The national qualifiers is a competition with high school students in Arizona competing in various speech and debate categories that qualify for nationals.
Mahima Sanghera ‘25 won 3rd in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate, qualifying for nationals. Hope Smith ‘24 won 1st in Dramatic Interpretation, also qualifying for nationals.
Elise Kindle ‘24 won 3rd in Informative Speaking, which is an original speech to describe a particular subject. Kindle also won 3rd in Big Questions Debate, specific for engaging in life discussion, but she chose to attend nationals this year in Informative Speaking.
The 2024 National Speech and Debate Tournament will be held in Des Moines, Iowa this June.
Shya Pethtel ‘26, a member of the speech and debate team stated, “This team has been a safe space and a loving community.”
Similarly, Mariana Rodrigues said that this team is a family and she is lucky to be a part of speech and debate, hoping more students will join in the following years.
Xavier-Brophy Speech and Debate won 1st in the national qualifiers sweepstakes and 1st in the entire competition season’s overall debate sweepstakes, scoring the most points.
