Xavier sports are preparing for another successful playoffs’ season. Last year, both basketball and soccer ended their seasons victoriously, giving Xavier two 6A state championships.
The soccer team is currently a four-time defending state champion and is working in its playoff season. The team is currently ranked #2 in the 6A division and has a record of 13-1. There is much pressure for the Gators to keep up a potential 5-peat.
Through strength training and conditioning, the Gators have geared up for these playoffs. Coach Barb Chura was recently recognized as the Women’s National High School Coach of the Year and the Gators next playoff game is Tuesday, February 18 against Crismon.
Alongside the soccer team, the varsity basketball Gators ended their most successful season in Xavier history last year with the team’s first state championship.
With a current record of 13-6 and a #5 ranking overall in the 6A division, the Gators stand a good chance in the playoffs.
Varsity player Avianna Damon-Showalter ‘26 said, “I really want the team to give it our all and see where we go.”
The last regular season game for basketball was February 12 at Millennium High School. The open state first round game will be on February 18.
Vice principal of Xavier and director of athletics and activities Sister Lynn Winsor expressed her high hopes for both of the athletic teams.
“The teams are playing pretty well this year and it looks like we could bring home a state title in either sport,” Winsor said.
