After a long day of school, Celeste Mancini ‘26 picks up one of the two girls she babysits. Mancini explains how she fell in love with babysitting, saying, “I think it is important to set a good example and make the kids feel heard.”
Babysitting seems like an easy job to most, but in reality, a person needs a certain skillset to be able to deal with children.
“Sometimes it’s a struggle, but talking to the kids about their day makes it all worth it,” Mancini said.
Some days are harder than others and Mancini explains that “driving is difficult. I use a lot of gas some of the days,” as she often has to drive far.
Elly Cantoni ‘25 uses her acting skills in her job as she works as a party princess at younger kids’ parties. “My favorite thing about my job is definitely the kids. I love to see their reactions to seeing their idols,” Cantoni said.
Becoming a party princess is a difficult task as the employer needs to be a great actor, good with kids and keep composure when kids act up.
“Sometimes certain parents, for some reason, need for us to know that they know we aren’t real.” Cantoni explains that it can ruin the magic for some of the kids.
She recalls her favorite memory on the job. “When I played Anna from ‘Frozen,’ this little girl ran up to me and gave me the longest hug. I ended up holding her for most of the party.”
With a great sense of creativity, Tanya Mock ‘26 utilizes it in her job at One Stop Nutrition. One Stop Nutrition is a shake and smoothie place focused on internal health and overall nutrition for athletes.
“Making the shakes gives me a great sense of creativity,” Mock says as she talks about all of the different combinations and creations she makes.
“I have learned how important customer service is. I don’t think I can ever treat waitstaff poorly again,” Mock explains.
It is important to have the skill to deal with rude customers in a professional manner. Mock talks about the times she dealt with unruly customers and how it has changed her perspective on customer service.
Like every job, there are some tasks that are harder than others. “For example, mopping the floor is a mandatory task for me, but sometimes it hurts my back, and it can take a while,” Mock said.
Xavier girls are working hard and taking on additional responsibilities, in addition to everything they accomplish at school. They are learning how the world works and latching onto the workforce.
