Xavier College Preparatory’s Sister Lynn Winsor and Sister Joan Fitzgerald, were recently recognized with prestigious awards.
Winsor was inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame on July 1, 2023, followed by Fitzgerald, awarded Most Influential Woman in Arizona Business on August 17, 2023.
Winsor, along with 11 coaches and athletic directors, was inducted in Seattle, Washington. She attended a press conference and the awards were given to all inductees. Her nomination was for her work in the Arizona Interscholastic Association of Women’s Equity in Sports.
Winsor attributes her induction to the spotlight of more than 500 Xavier high school golf wins and her additional campus work.
“The biggest thing I think when you get something like this is that it’s not me who did it, it’s the kids, the kids on the team, the school, the activities, and then the backup from Sister Joan and sister Joanie,” said Winsor.
Winsor gave a speech about her commitment to the school and the students at Xavier. Eight sisters attended her press conference, traveling nationwide to support her.
“It’s a huge honor; the people I was with, the things that they’ve done were stupendous really, and I am very honored to be a part of it,” Windsor said.
In regards to Fitzgerald’s award, 1,900 women were considered and 34 were inducted. Fitzgerald was recognized for impacting the community and the city.
“I have had the opportunity to work with young people all my life, and they are the ones who make it possible,” Fitzgerald said.
She was celebrated with fellow inductees at a dinner at Chateau Lux in North Scottsdale. More than 1,000 people attended the event, and many were there supporting her in her accomplishment.
Fitzgerald spoke highly about Xavier and the community that has been created.
“We always rise to the occasion, whether celebrating someone’s birthday, something that grieves you, or the rallies. It’s the enthusiasm [at Xavier],” Fitzgerald said.
Tara Metzger has worked with Fitzgerald as an administrative assistant for 15 years. She is thankful for Fitzgerald’s impact on her life.
“She’s taught me how to have a great work ethic, never give up at anything I’m doing and she’s influenced my faith,” said Metzger.
Both sisters create an impact on the campus and those around them. The awards they have received inspire faculty and students.
