The grandparents’ Mass is an annual Xavier tradition that has lasted for over a decade. It originated in 2008 and is one of the most successful events Xavier holds.
Normally the Mass is followed by the Gators and their grandparents gathering in Founders Hall.
While they snack on the lunch provided, Sister Lynn Winsor, Xavier’s vice principal of activities, gives a speech that explains Xavier’s goal and what the Xavier experience looks like.
After students depart for their classes, grandparents are offered a special tour of the school which gives them insight into what it looks like to be a Xavier Gator. It also gives the grandparents a chance to see how Gators celebrate their faith.
According to theology teacher Danielle Burr, Xavier did not have a grandparents’ Mass at the time she attended the school and the decision to have the Mass has fluctuated over time.
Originally, the tradition was set up specifically for freshwomen and their grandparents. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, grandparents’ day festivities had to be put on hold.
In an effort to make up for the time that was lost, Xavier decided to have three grandparents’ days over the course of one year.
Polly Fitz-Gerald, director of alumnae relations, said that the schedule for this event in the future will return to normal, meaning there will only be one grandparents’ day per year.
“The grandparents love to see the school and I personally love it as well,” Fitz-Gerald said. “It is always a very successful event.”
She adds that the September 29 grandparents’ Mass is not the final grandparents’ Mass. Principal Sister Joanie Nuckols wishes for these special events to continue.
This year there were approximately 250 grandparents who came to the event.
Grandparents’ day is a meaningful experience that allows the students and their grandparents to connect and become closer. It also benefits Xavier by bringing the community closer and further expanding the support given to the school.
It’s an event that many people look forward to throughout the year. Students especially love this occasion because they get to show their grandparents what their everyday routine looks like at Xavier.
“I loved observing the grandparents come and spend time with their grandchildren. Grandparents’ day is one of my favorite events!” Julia Tipsord ‘24 said.
The grandparents’ Mass is an ongoing tradition in Xavier’s history and it continues to be beloved by all.
