HOW TO: survive after school when you can’t go home

Part of Xavier’s uniqueness is the wide range of girls who attend the school. Some live right down Central and roll out of bed at 7:20 in the morning, while others reside in Gilbert and begin their daily trek to school far, far earlier. I live somewhere in between those two situations, and look at a thirty minute transit every morning. However, I am more concerned with what occurs after school. If you are like me and are significantly involved in different school activities, you will find yourself in a dilemma: do I stay or do I go? Do you brave the long journey home, only to quickly turn around and immediately return to school? Perhaps you fall into the second category I previously spoke of, and there is no way you could make it home and back in a timely manner. Whoever you are, wherever you live, this is the post for you! Three basketball seasons during which I have been forced to brave the streets everyday until 5 pm have trained me for this exact moment. I will now list some places which have helped me to survive when drifting aimlessly after school. All of these establishments are close to school, sell food and have areas in which to do homework (including free Wi-Fi).

  1. Changing Hands. Located at 3rd Ave and Camelback, you are unlikely to find a better environment in which to do your homework. Head to the back of this book store and you will find an oasis of tables and chairs calling your name.
  2. Lux. Located at Central and W Turney Ave, don’t let the intensely indie and edgy atmosphere intimidate you. This coffee shop plays the best music and has the best mac n’ cheese a girl could buy.
  3. Luci’s at the Orchard. Located at 12th Street and Glendale, this adorable establishment includes both indoor and outdoor seating and a very happy ambience. Luci’s seconds as a marketplace and therefore ensures the availability of a quick, healthy snack if needed. (Note: There is also a Luci’s located at Bethany and 16th Street, although the parking is far more limited).
  4. Nektar. Located at Camelback and 20th street, this healthy juice bar may just be the quieter location you are looking for. If you live for those acai bowls which are sweeping the nation, this is the place for you. Nothing is quite like doing homework in such a sweet smelling place.
  5. Panera. Located at Glendale and 12th Street, this an age old classic for getting work done. Perhaps a more familiar option for you, Panera provides a multitude of tables and booths in which to do homework while munching on some of their famous cookies.

Finally, I have two alternative locations which might better fit your needs. The first is our very own Founders Hall. After 3:30, Founders is very quiet and peaceful and will ensure you won’t be late to your sport practice/club activity. The second is to find a friend who resides extremely close to Xavier and enjoys your company. They can become your go-to after-school stop to give you more of a “homey” feel when the nostalgia for the comfort of your own home begins. I hope these tips will help your busy after school schedule when you feel as though you have nowhere to go. Just know, we’ve all been there. Good luck!
