Senator John McCain died Aug. 25, 2018 from Glioblastoma, a malignant tumor that affects the brain or spine. McCain was a big sponsor and supporter of the Xavier Community, and he cared deeply about Xavier.

Xavier College Preparatory and Brophy College Preparatory staff and students came out to the streets to witness John McCain’s body pass by the Thursday after his passing. On Aug. 30, 2018, the people of Arizona crowded the streets of Phoenix as McCain’s family and body was transported from the North Phoenix Baptist Church to the airport to make the journey to Washington. Xavier College Preparatory and Brophy College Preparatory students and staff all gathered together after morning classes to join other Arizona citizens on the streets of Central and Camelback. Students held signs and flags and mourned together with the family and friends of John McCain.

Senior, Anaise Luna,  a supporter of John McCain, attended his memorial service at the Arizona State Capitol and speaks of how “John McCain … was willing to fight for things in which would help Americans even if it did mean going against his own party… he’s truly a hero in my eyes for being able to survive those horrible years and rise above. When Xavier and Brophy went out for the funeral procession, it was truly beautiful to have everyone come together regardless if you were a Democrat or Republican to honor John McCain.”

John McCain was a US Senator from Arizona. He was also a presidential candidate in the 2008 elections; unfortunately, he lost to President Barack Obama. John McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer one year ago. During the one year he had before his death, McCain’s senate duties in D.C. were done from his home in AZ.

John McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain  ’03,  attended Xavier College Preparatory. Xavier was greatly impacted by the news of John McCain’s death and forever thanks him for his help. John McCain was a true hero who supported and dreamed for the greater good of his people. He was a strong political influencer, and he did so much for Arizona. Besides donating to the Xavier community, the McCain Media Center stands as a reminder of and honor to McCain and his family.

Rest in Peace John McCain.

Our prayers go out to his friends and family.
