Xavier is known for its highly dedicated student athletes. As the school furthers into its spring sports season, many of the teams improve skill and push toward playoffs.
One of the many teams thriving this season is Xavier lacrosse.
With a game streak of 6-6 so far, the team continues to work hard and put in its best effort in order to continue winning as much as possible.
Head coach Diana Oduho shared, “This season the team has been doing a lot of rebuilding. I am very proud of the many underclassmen that have stepped up this season to meet varsity’s expectations.”
She also commented that the team has been playing consistent and really good lacrosse, and she hopes it continues to play well for its first playoff game on Tuesday, April 23.
One of the team’s pre-game rituals is getting a word-of-the-game from Oduho.
Libby Donaldson ‘25 says that so far her favorite word given before a game is “grit.”
This is just one example of how words of encouragement have helped the team show throughout games and come out with wins.
Captain McKenna Boyer ‘24 said, “We lost to a lot of good teams last year, and we are doing so much better this year in comparison.” During this season, lacrosse has won against teams such as Corona del Sol High School, Notre Dame Prep and Cactus Shadows.
She also expressed that she is excited to see the team grow closer together as it heads toward its goal of playing successfully in playoffs.
As the team progresses, it will say goodbye to the nine graduating seniors, and it looks forward to seeing more girls come and try out to add to the overall team spirit.
Marlee Mccloskey ‘24 shared that the team this season has amazing leaders and everyone enjoys bonding with one another.
She added that lacrosse is a really fun, different sport that everyone should try and experience because as the team grows, support will be important.
