On April 3, “Crystal,” an acrobatic ice-skating show performed by the company Cirque du Soleil, had its show in Phoenix, Arizona at the PHX Arena.
XPress editors were given the opportunity to explore behind the scenes of the production prior to the show.
With people completing gymnastic feats such as acrobatics, the safety behind the performance was crucial to the success of both the show and the performers.
Amber Van Wijk, “Crystal” artist who played one of the Crystals in the show, spoke about how Cirque du Soleil ensures safety on the ice and including behind the scenes.
“The majority of injuries occur outside of the set; they happen when we are playing around in training or just doing normal-life stuff,” Wijk said.
The Crystal Tour’s publicist, Roberto Larroude, explained that there are many measures taken to ensure the safety of all performers.
One such measure includes practicing with all equipment before the show, especially for scenes involving performers being lifted off the ground and performing tricks in the air which XPress editors saw from a front row seat.
