Despite losing one of its star players to injury, Xavier College Preparatory’s varsity golf team refused to let the setback stand in the way of victory. With Gabby Doss ‘29 stepping up when her team needed her most, the Gators secured their fourth consecutive state championship, proving that teamwork is the key to success.
The Gators finished the two-day tournament with a combined score of 595, 19 over par. Xavier finished just four strokes ahead of runner-up Pinnacle High School, securing the program’s 41st state championship in school history.
Knowing they were cheering each other on is what gave Xavier’s varsity golf team the motivation to succeed. The team’s positive energy as well as support for one another played an important role throughout the tournament. “I think my biggest motivation is my team, and just the environment that they bring, as well as the positivity that helps us,” said Maia Bleyl ‘28.
Head coach Tui Selvaratnam recognized how hard the girls have worked as a team to continue Xavier’s winning tradition. “I think it is the culture we have built over the years. It does not matter whether you are the number one player or number 13, they all just want to perform their best and continue the traditions,” Selvaratnam said.
While supporting each other on the team is a major factor in their success, the amount of individual effort they put in is also remarkable. Alexis Lamadrid ‘27 earned her third consecutive individual state championship, finishing the tournament with a score of 136, eight under par.
The team also relied on the younger players to contribute to the victory. Claire Brooks ‘30 finished tied for fourth place individually with a score of 145, while Addison Taylor ‘29 tied for seventh with a score of 148. Their performances helped Xavier maintain its narrow lead over Pinnacle.
Even during challenging moments, the girls continued to encourage one another and maintain positive attitudes. Whether they are practicing, competing or spending time together, the players are always laughing, making jokes and supporting each other. These friendships have helped create an environment where everyone is motivated to perform at their best.
With four consecutive state championships, Xavier’s varsity golf team continues to build on its long history of success. Despite facing injuries and tough competition, the Gators proved that their success is about more than individual talent. Their latest victory shows a team culture built on hard work, encouragement and a community ready to win.
